Hand values and the goal of 21
Every card carries a points value. Twos through tens are worth their number, the face cards — Jack, Queen and King — are each worth 10, and the Ace is flexible, counting as 11 unless that would bust you, in which case it drops to 1. Add your cards together and you're aiming to finish nearer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding it.
A two-card hand of an Ace plus any ten-value card is a blackjack — an unbeatable 21 that normally pays a premium. Go over 21 at any point and you bust, losing the hand immediately regardless of what the dealer does next.

Hit
Draw another card to move your total closer to 21. You can keep hitting until you stand or bust.
Stand
Keep your current total and pass play to the dealer. A good choice when another card is likely to bust you.
Double down
Double your stake in exchange for exactly one more card. Best kept for strong starting totals; availability depends on the version.
Split
If your first two cards match, separate them into two hands, each with its own bet. Rules on splitting vary between tables.
Dealer rules and table limits
The dealer doesn't make choices the way you do; they follow a fixed rule, typically drawing to a set total and standing after that. Because the dealer acts last, your bust always costs you even if the dealer later busts too — one reason position matters. Each table also sets a minimum and maximum bet. A round runs in a set order: you receive your cards, act on your hand, and then the dealer reveals and completes theirs. Comparing the two totals decides the payout — win, lose or push (a tie, where your stake is returned).
